Chasing Rita
The scene takes place in a cafe in conservative, small-town Libertyville, Illinois. RITA, a pre-adolescent girl, is eating from a basket of chips with a pickle on the side. The sandwich, which we assume must have once been included in the meal, is conspicuously absent. ELLEN, a classmate of RITA's, is eating a sandwich that could easily be RITA's, but we are unsure whether it is RITA's, and if it is, whether RITA gave permission to ELLEN to eat the sandwich or whether ELLEN swiped it from RITA's plastic basket while RITA was telling a story about her new boyfriend, SAM (off stage).
RITA: So, anyway, like he even knows what "perpetual" means.
RITA hands ELLEN a napkin with a sailboat printed on it.
ELLEN [chewing, wiping Dijon mustard off side of mouth]: Yeah. Oh, thanks. Hey [motioning with napkin] let's give this SAM, since he went sailing this morning!
RITA [looking skeptically at ELLEN]: Is that my sandwich?
